THE LETTER I

The letter I, is the subject of today blog. My words are, Improved, Internet, Instant, Interesting, Interesting, Islands, Important Issues, Irrigation, Innovation.

Writing

I only write on a computer. I stopped writing by hand a long time ago. It was hard to read, and I made too many mistakes because I was impatient. Since I have used a computer, it has Improved my spelling and grammar. It also means I have the Internet for Instant fact-finding. I wrote a poem in 2009 calledI Am Me,” published in my first book of poems, Wild Child, 2010.

I Am Me

I am

Part of a family,

All of my heritage,

Part of my friends

Throughout the world.

They control me,

They nourish me,

They are the reason

I am.

I have gifts;

Strong hidden powers

Deep inside,

Being one with the universe.

I have fears;

A family of ancestors,

A way of life

Controlled

Being part of a family.

I have desires

To breakthrough

These walls,

Reverse the pain,

Bring the inside out

Break control,

Be all of me.

Interesting facts about my life

Before I came to America in 1991, I had only ever lived on Islands. In my first memoir, CHOSEN, I describe the places where I lived with my parents from 1950 to 1964. Barbados was 21 by 14 miles, Monserrat, 39 square miles, and the half where I lived had been buried under volcanic rubble since July 1995. And St. Vincent was 18 by 11 miles. After leaving the tropics, I went to England. It is also an Island, just much larger than the islands in the Caribbean.

Important Issues

Pets

I need to be ready to get out of bed the instant Daisy raises her head off her bed. She has to go outside. I also have to make her something to eat while Henry and I walk. Make my coffee to go while Henry and I take our morning stroll. Today, we took the path toward the beach but turned off the trail and walked through the technical school. There were no herons in the trees but plenty of squirrels and birds to watch and listen to. Henry does his own meet and greet with other dogs, and then we come home.

Garden

The flower of this week is Iris Pumila (dwarf bearded Iris)

Several Irrigation lines in my garden water my plants during the summer. My son suggested that I create artistic markers. It would make it easier to locate the end of each line. It was time-consuming but enjoyable to paint, decorate, and varnish to protect against the weather. I came up with different Innovative artistic Ideas for my enjoyment. Today, after my walk, I drilled the holes in the bottom to insert rebar to secure them in the ground.

Books

I recently read a memoir by the author of Hamnet, Maggie O’Farrell. I enjoyed it so much that I bought her memoir,I AM, I AM, I AM. It is an astonishing memoir in which she shares seventeen near-death experiences that have punctured and defined her life.

Thanks for reading, EJP

  1. Wow! Bellingham must be a world away from the Caribbean. I’m so acclimated to wet and cold, I don’t know if I could handle the moist and warm of those islands. I assume you’ve acclimated. Your life story reminds me of when I studied Jean Rhys. Take care!

    1. I love Jean Rhys. I’m still trying to find a copy of her memoir, now out of print. Someday!
