My friend Paul and I spent the afternoon looking for tulips. We drove leisurely down Chuckanut Drive, which reminded me of a poem I wrote for a friend many years ago.
Chuckanut Drive
On a clear Sunday afternoon
We meet and drive
through dappled light shining on
lime colored leaves.
A sweet, green fragrance wafts
through our open windows.
We watch a line of gleaming Haleys
Stream by, respectfully.
Pass a long row of parked cars,
and imagine,
picnickers at Clayton Beach
The water shimmers crystal blue
Way out, beyond the ebbing tide.
Black sand and green algae
Surround exposed oyster beds.
Historic Edison is lively, colorful,
smells of fresh bread
we wander through Christianson’s
Smell the roses, in full bloom.
Eat Marion berry pie
and homemade ice cream
at the Rhododendron Café
A perfect afternoon’s drive
Motoring the scenic Chuckanut Drive
with my dear friend,
Sally.
We saw lots of golden daffodils and a few incredible tulips on the front edges of Roozengarde. Afterward, we headed to La Conner for lunch at the Calico Cupboard. Great food and excellent service. We walked through the town and back to the car along the walkway by the river. The cold wind blew through our hair, down our coat sleeves, and made our eyes weep. Henry, my dog, was as happy as we were to reach the car and turn on the heat.
